“Yes, mother I did. Oh, while we were getting my things together, I got a call from a lady saying that she was you sister her name is Linda and she said to tell you that she was coming to see us and that she will be here on Monday.”
“Really I have not heard from Linda in years, I wonder what made her decide to call me after all these years, did she say anything else like where she was.”
“No, she didn’t all she said is that she will be here on Monday.”
“It will be nice to see her again it has been a long time and I would really like for you to get to know her. I hope everything is okay with her.”
Miranda got to the hospital a little earlier than what she said but it was okay because my mother was starting to get tired. On the driver back to Miranda’s she asked how my mother was doing and if the doctor said anything different.
“She is doing okay, and the doctor said that there is no change.”
When we got to her house we went up to her room and talk for a while before we went to bed.
The next day in school, I had a hard time concentrating in class all I could do was think about my Aunt Linda and what she looks like and what she would be like. After school, Miranda and I went to visit my mother for a while. We didn’t stay for very long because my mother was having a bad day and didn’t feel like having company. After we left the hospital, we went to The Border it is a little cafe where all the kids go to hang out. We went in and ordered some fries and a drink and then sat down. Bradley and Braxton the twins came in just after we did, they came up to us and asked if they could sit with us. Miranda said, yes, of course, you can sit with us, with a big smile on her face. They went and ordered them some drinks and fries then came and sat with us.
“So, what are you girls going to do this weekend? Bradley asked.”
“We don’t know yet, we were thinking of hanging out at the mall for a while and then going to a movie. What do you guys have planned?”
“We’re not sure yet.”
“Well maybe we could hang out together if you guys want to?”
“Yeah maybe we could, I can call you Saturday afternoon and we can make plan if that is okay with you?”
“That would be good, right Lacey.”
“Yeah it would.”
“Okay then we will talk to you Saturday.”
They finished their fries and drinks then left. After they left Miranda said that she was hoping that Bradley would ask her to the prom.
I told her that I hoped that he asked her to.
“Maybe Braxton will ask you to go.”
I gave her a funny look and said yeah right. After we finished are fries and drink, we went back to Miranda’s. When we walked up to the door to go in, we could hear Miranda’s mother and father arguing. I told Miranda that I was going to go up to my bedroom and that I would see her in the morning. She said okay and that she was going to do the same, as we were walking up the stairs, Miranda’s mother called out to her to come here, your father and I need to talk to you.
“Okay mother I will be right there. She looked at me and said goodnight.”
I told her goodnight and went up to my room; I took a shower and went to bed.
Just as I got into bed there was a knock at my door I got up and opened it and there was Miranda standing there crying. I put my arm around her and told her to come in and sit on my bed. When we got sat on my bed, I asked her what was wrong? She looked at me and said my parents are getting a separation.
“My dad is leaving first thing in the morning.”
I hugged her titer and told her, I’m sorry I do not know what to say, but I am sure that they will work thing out and everything will be okay.
“Yeah you’re probably right.”
We hug and then Miranda got up and went to her room.
School went by so slow the next day, Miranda was so depressed that she was not the talkative person that she usually is, it was even worse at home all she did was mope around. I would ask her if I could do anything for her but all she would say is no, I do not need anything I am fine.
Chapter Three
My Aunt Linda arrived on Monday; she got to the hospital about an hour after I did. She walked into the room as if see was a queen; she was an elegant beauty in a wide-brim white hat, a lace coat over her milk-white silk dress. She wore matching silk gloves and large diamond earrings. Her hair was a sleek cap of pale shining gold, pulled back from her face to show a sculptured profile and unlined face.
“Hi, you must be Lacey; I am your Aunt Linda glad to meet you. Oh my, you are beautiful; you look so much like your mother I can’t believe it. So how is your mother doing?”
“She is doing as well as you can expect, the chemotherapy makes her real sick and she sleeps a lot. Do you want me to wake her?”
“No not yet, let’s let her sleep. Have you had anything to eat yet?”
“No, I came here right after school.”
“While your mother sleeps, let’s go down to the cafeteria and get something to eat. We can get to know each other over some dinner.”
When got to the cafeteria we ordered are food and sat down. My Aunt Linda looked at me and asked me, how are things going at school and if I like it?
I told her that it was going well, and that I don’t mind it. I enjoy being there with all my friends.
“Where do you live?”
“I live in Florida.”
“Are you married, and do you have any kids?”
“I was married but my husband died of a heart attack two years ago and we didn’t have time to have kids.”
“Oh, I’m sorry about your husband.”
“Thank you.”
“Did you want to have kids?”
“Yes, we did.”
We sat there and talk for almost two hours before we realized how late it was getting, we look at each other and my Aunt Linda said that we should go check on my mother and let her know that she was here. Yes, we should and off we went to her room. When we got to her room, she was sitting up in her bed eating.
“Hi, mother look Aunt Linda is here she got her this afternoon.”
“Hi, Nancy how are you feeling?”
“I am doing okay. How are you doing?”
“I am doing okay.”
“God it has been such a long time has it.
“Yes, it has. I’m sorry I have not kept in touch with you I was just going through some bad times and did not want to bother anyone with my problems.”
“Oh, Linda you know that you could have come to me about anything, I love you.”
“I know but I thought it would be better if I handle things on my own.”
“Okay let’s just put the past behind us. What can I do for you, Nancy? Can I stay and help take care of Lacey for you while you are still in the hospital? I can stay as long as you need me to.”
“That way Lacey can stay in her own bed and we can get to know each other.”
“Yes, I think that would be nice, if that is okay with you Lacey. So, what do you think Lacey?” My mother asked me.
“I think that would be nice.”
After we sat and visited with my mother for a while, my Aunt Linda said that we should go it is getting late. Besides, it looks like your mother is getting tired.
“Yes, I think you are right.”
I walk over, gave my mother a kiss and a hug, and told her that I would see her tomorrow after school.
“Okay goodnight Lacey, I love you.”
“I love you to mother.”
Then my Aunt Linda gave my mother a hug and a kiss and told her that she would be back in the morning as soon as she dropped me off at school and then we left.
“So, let’s go get your stuff from your friend’s house and go home.”
We went out to the parking lot and got into my Aunts car it was the nicest car that I have ever seen it was a Mercedes Benz. I thought Miranda’s car was nice, but my Aunt Linda’s car made hers look like junk. On the way to Miranda’s my Aunt Lind
a said she wanted to take me shopping this weekend if it was okay with my mother.
“I will ask your mother if it is okay tomorrow when I go see her.”
“Okay that sounds like it would be fun.”
When we pulled up to Miranda’s she was just getting out of her car to go into the house. I jumped out of the car and yelled to her.
“Hey Miranda; I would like you to meet my Aunt Linda.”
She walked over to my Aunt’s car.
“Aunt Linda this is my best friend Miranda.”
“It was nice to meet you Miranda.”
“Thank you, it is nice to me you to.”
I told Miranda that my Aunt was going to stay with me at my house while my mother is in the hospital.
“Yeah that is a good idea it will be better for you than staying here with me in this crazy house.”
“You know that you can come over anytime you want to get away from here.”
“I know thank you.”
I told my Aunt Linda that I would be right back, and I turned and followed Miranda into the house to get my things, she helped me pack my thing. While we were getting my things together, I asked her if she has heard from her dad.
“Yeah I talk to him today after I dropped you of at the hospital. He said that he and my mother are trying to work thing out, but he didn't sound too good.”
“I'm sorry I hope that they work thing out.”
“Yeah I do to. I will walk you to the door.”
“Oh, my Aunt Linda will be taking me to school for the next few days, so you don't have to come and get me in the morning.”
“Okay I will see you at school tomorrow.”
At the door we hug and said goodbye and I went to the car.
When we got to my house, I showed my Aunt Linda to the guest room. Then went to my room and went to bed so I could get up for school in the morning. Aunt Linda was up and had breakfast ready for me by the time I got up and ready for school. After we finished breakfast, Aunt Linda drove me to school.
“I will be here to pick you up after school if that is okay with you and then we can go straight to the hospital to see your mother. What time does school get out?”
“Yeah that would be great. And school gets out at 2:30.”
“Okay I will see you then, Have a nice day.”
“Thank you, I will see you after school.”
As I was head in to the school I seen Miranda and ran to catch up to her and walk to class with her we have home room together. When I caught up to her I ask how she was.
“I'm good my father calls again last night, and he is going to take me to dinner tonight.”
“That’s good.”
When the bell rang, I told Miranda that I would see her at lunch and then headed to my next class. I meet Miranda in the lunch room, and we talk about where her father was going to take her for lunch. She was excited for the day to end so she could see her father. I was happy for her. The rest of the day went by really slow I thought that it was never going to end.
My Aunt Linda was there after school to pick me up just as she said she would be; and we went straight to the hospital to see my mother. When we got there, she was just finishing her dialysis treatment.
“Hi, mother how do you feeling to day.”
“Good the doctor said that if I am still doing well by the end of the week that I can go home.”
“That is great I cannot wait for you to come home. Aunt Linda said that she wants to take me shopping this weekend if it is okay with you.”
“Yes, she asked me earlier today and it is okay with me.”
“If you do get to come home will you be able to go with us?”
“No, the doctor said that the only way I could go home is if I take it very easy and spend most of the time in bed.”
On Thursday, the doctor said that she could go home on Friday. School on Friday went by so slow because all I could think about was going to get my mother after school. Aunt Linda picked me up after school and we went straight to the hospital to pick up my mother. When we got there, she was dressed and waiting for us.
“Are you ready to leave yet mother?”
“Just about, I am just waiting for the nurse to bring me some paper to sign.”
After the nurse came and left, I got my mother’s bag and cared them down to the car. When we walked up to my Aunt Linda’s car, she looked at my Aunt Linda and said WOW nice car.
“Thank you.”
I put her bags in the trunk and then helped her into the front set. On the way home, my mother asked how things were going at home. I told her that they were going good and now that she was home it will be better. As we pulled into the driveway, I saw Miranda’s car, she was standing at the door with a big welcome home sign. When we stopped, I got out, help my mother out of the car, and then got her bags out of the trunk. My Aunt Linda helped her into the house and sat her on the couch.
Miranda had a cake that said welcome home Nancy on it.
“Thank you, Miranda that was very sweet of you.”
“Would you like a piece?”
“Yes, please just a small piece though.”
I went and got some plate and paper towels, while Miranda cut the cake. After my mother ate her cake, she said that she was tired and wanted to go lay down. Miranda and I helped her into her bedroom and got her into bed.
Miranda and I went to my room so we could talk before she had to go home.
“So how was your dinner with your father?” I asked.
“It was good we had a lot of fun, it was nice to see him.”
“Have you heard from Bradley?”
“Yes, he called me last night and he asked if I wanted to go to the prom with him.”
“That's good I told you that he would ask.”
“Yeah I'm excited. I hope that Braxton will ask you to go with him so that we can go together that would be great.”
Miranda looked at her watch and said that it was getting late that she better be getting home.
“Okay I will walk with you to the door.”
After we had breakfast and made sure that my mother was going to be okay for a couple of hours. My Aunt Linda and I went shopping. We had fun she bought me a new outfit that coasted more then all my cloths in my closet did. I told her that she did not have to buy it for me, but she insisted on it. She also bought one for my mother along with matching earrings and necklace.
We got home just in time for lunch as soon as I got in the house and put my stuff down, I went to check on my mother.
“Hello, mother we’re home how are you feeling?”
“I am doing well, how was shopping?”
“We had a lot of fun I will show you what I got after we have some lunch.”
“Okay that sound good I am getting a little hunger.”
“I will come and get you as soon as lunch is ready okay.”
I went into the kitchen and made lunch; while I was making us lunch my Aunt Linda washed up and changed her cloths. When it was ready, I told my Aunt Linda that lunch was ready and that I was going to help my mother into the kitchen.
As we ate lunch, I told my mother about mine and my Aunt Linda’s shopping day.
“We went to a lot of store that I have never been in, it was so fun.”
“It sounds like you had a lot of fun.”
After lunch, I showed my mother the cloths that my Aunt Linda bought for me.
“Those are very nice Lacey.”
“You know that you didn’t have to buy those for her Linda.”
“I know it is okay I wanted to buy them. I also bought some stuff for you. Lacey would you get the bag that has your mothers’ stuff in it for me please.”
“Yes, I will oh mother you’re going to love what Aunt Linda bought for you.”
I gave her the bag and when she pulled out the things that Aunt Linda bought for her, she was shocked.
“These are very nice, but they much have coasted a fortune I can take these.”

Please take them I want you to have them it would mean a lot to me and don't argue with me about it you know you will lose like when we we're kids.”
“Yeah I know I never did win any of our argument, okay thank you Linda it was very nice of you to buy this stuff for Lacey and me.”
“It is the least I can do I want to make up for the time that I was gone.”
“You don’t have to make it up to me by buying us expensive stuff you just being here is enough.”
My Aunt Linda bought my mother and me lots of new clothes, shoes and she even bought a new couch for us and a new bed for my mother she didn’t ‘t wants her sleeping on that old worn out one. My mother kept telling her that she didn’t need to buy us all these things, but she keeps insisted on doing it.
My mother was doing well for the next few weeks but then she started to get sicker again. She got so sick that she ended up back in the hospital again it did not look good I was so scared that she was going to die.
There was only a week left of school so as soon as school was out, I could spend a lot more time with her at the hospital. On the last day of school just before lunch, the principle called me to her office. I was worried why I was being called to the principal’s office I did not do anything wrong that I know of. When I got there, the receptionist told me to sit down that Ms. Long, would me with me in a minuet. I sat there for about five minutes before Ms. Long called me in to her office.
“Come in and sit-down Lacey I have something that I need to tell you.”
I sat in one of the big leather chairs in front of her desk. After I sat down, I asked Ms. Long what is this all about.
“Lacey, I have some bad new to tell you I just got a call from the hospital and they just informed me that your mother is not doing well, and they don’t think that she is going to last much longer. Your Aunt Linda will be here shortly to pick you up and take you to the hospital. If there is anything that I can do for you, please don’t hesitate to ask.”
All I could do was sit there and stare at her; I could not believe what I was hearing. She told me that I could want in the outer office for my Aunt to get here.
“She said that she will explain everything to you went she gets here. I will leave you alone and tell she get here.”
